چکیده
OBJECTIVE To investigate long-term trends in mortality rates for accidents to fishing vessels in the UK fishing industry from 1948 to 2008; to investigate the circumstances and causes of these fishing vessel accidents and trends in fishing vessel losses. MATERIAL AND METHODS Examination of paper death inquiry files, death registers, marine accident investigative files, annual casualty and death returns. RESULTS Of 1039 fatalities from accidents to UK fishing vessels from 1948 to 2008, most (65%) resulted from vessels that foundered (or capsized or disappeared), followed by vessels grounding (21%), collisions (7%), and fires and explosions (5%). There was a significant increase over time of 1.04% per year in the overall fishing vessel loss rate and for vessels that foundered (5.19%), a reduction for vessels grounding (1.13%), but no trends for collisions or fires and explosions. Regarding mortality, there was a significant reduction over time for grounding (1.44%) and a non-significant reduction for vessel accidents overall, but no trends for other types of vessel accident. Mortality was highest during the winter months (for foundering and grounding), during night time (for grounding, fires and explosions), and afternoons (foundering and collisions). Since 1976, most fatalities from collisions (83%) occurred in the English Channel and North Sea, while 49% from grounding occurred off the west coast of Scotland. CONCLUSION The mortality rate from fishing vessel casualties in UK fishing is still very high. Fatalities in recent years have often been linked to fishing vessels that are unstable, overloaded, and unseaworthy.

متن کاملHave "formal investigations" into fishing vessel losses ceased?
Systematic studies of 618 fishing vessel losses between January 1961 and December 1982 have shown a significantly increased incidence of total losses from 1972 onwards. Comparison of mean pre- and post-1972 rates indicated an increase of 120% from 2.54 to 5.58 losses per 1000 vessels at risk. Parallel examination of the mortality of fishermen from all occupational accidents showed no improvemen...
متن کاملAnalysis on technical efficiency and influencing factors of fishing vessels: a case study of Haizhou Bay, China
This paper used Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to measure the technical efficiency of fishing vessels in Haizhou Bay, and then used the Tobit regression to define its influencing factors. This study shows that the overall fishing capacity utilization of fishing vessels at present is very low which indicates that there is a serious problem of waste of resources in Haizhou Bay. Specifically, the...
متن کاملStocks status of kilka in Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea
The present study considered the situation of kilka stocks in last decades by using overfished biomass threshold, fishing effort ratio and fishing mortality proxy during 1991-2010. The CPUE index of anchovy and mixed-species of kilka indicated an undepleted from 1991 to 2000. In 2000, the CPUE ratio declined to close to the “in danger” region, and subsequently collapsed to “overfished” region f...
متن کاملCatch composition and fishing trend of kilka in Iranian part of the Caspian Sea
Population structure of three kilka fishes (Clupeonella spp.), particularly anchovy kilka (C. engrauliformis), in Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea was surveyed in 2003. A total of 3230 biweekly samples were collected from commercially landed kilka at 3 stations in Mazandaran and Guilan provinces. Catch and effort statistics were obtained from the relevant organization. Results showed a great d...
